Support the Arts in your own backyard!
As part of the Putnam Arts Council’s Art in Public Places Initiative, we bring interesting and accomplished art created by area artists to everyday places.
Heidi Stein is an established local artist known for exhibiting and teaching throughout the area. As an educator, Heidi teaches techniques in gel plate printing, card-making, and mixed media art. Her work incorporates a mix of recycled and hand-painted materials, transforming them into complex acrylic paintings enriched with added layers of texture, color, and intrigue. Through her art, Heidi aims to immortalize fleeting snippets of personal history, inviting viewers to consider the beauty and significance of the mundane.
Tilly’s Table Restaurant
100 Route 312, Brewster, NY 10509
The show at Tilly’s Table represents a sampling of Heidi’s work which will remain on display through summer 2025. The entrance holds two current works that feature cut-outs using templates to introduce a new way of thinking about images. The statement piece in this show is the abstraction of a bird of paradise flower. This painting is three feet square and features lush greens and oranges, typical of the tropical landscape. The bar seating area contains small, framed works showing the versatility of the gel plate as a printing tool. Many of Heidi’s artworks contain gel printed papers. The gel plate is a relatively new method used for printing at home which uses no harsh chemicals and doesn’t require a press. The method produces papers that are rich in visual texture, usually with multiple layers of paint. Despite the variety of non-objective, abstract works, there’s a common theme of a rich appreciation of color, layers of visual texture, and a complexity of approach to entice the viewer. Each of the works in the show encourages the viewer to think about the meaning of life, the definition of beauty, and the way art elevates colors, images, and objects into a dialogue with the viewer.
