Come join us at Putnam Arts Council for a fun filled Raku workshop and firing. Raku firing originated in the 16th century in Japan. The term Raku roughly translated means “ease”. During a Raku firing the potter removes a glazed fired piece of pottery from the kiln when the glaze has matured and melted.
Classes will be dedicated to exploring the Raku aesthetic using the American potters’ version of Japanese Raku. This consists of adding a post firing reduction and involves placing hot pots in combustibles such as sawdust and hay. During the first 2 classes, you will create and bisque fire your piece. During the 3rd class the piece will be glazed, with the Raku firing being done during the Saturday class. The end results can be spectacular, white crackle and copper lusters complimenting a deep black clay body. Hand-builders and potters alike are welcome. Pottery created during the workshop will express immediacy, asymmetry and a carefree spirit. The Raku firing is an interactive experience. All students will be encouraged to participate.
