Lilacs on Blue, oil on canvas, Therese Fokine

Putnam Arts Council features local artist, Therese Fokine, at Tilly’s Table Restaurant in Brewster

A collection of fifteen original oil paintings by artist Therese Fokine will be on display at Tilly’s Table located on Route 312 in Brewster, New York. The paintings are located in the bistro area of the restaurant.  The exhibition will be on view for several months and is part of the Putnam Arts Council’s Art in Public Places initiative, which brings fine art to everyday places.

Therese Fokine (Terry) has been painting and creating for more than 30 years. She works primarily in oils on canvas, while also exploring pastels, charcoal, acrylics, and watercolor, and has painted on a wide variety of surfaces, from walls and rocks to shells and furniture. Her body of work draws inspiration from nature’s whispers and the giants of art history, blending realism with a fresh pulse. Fokine invites viewers to experience how paint can still surprise us.

Fokine is drawn to colorful landscapes, people, plein air scenes, and still life, working in styles that blend realism and tonalism. Largely self-taught, she has also studied with artists Jeanne Demotses and Lee Hochberg.

For Fokine, painting is a way of truly seeing and connecting with the world. She believes that while a photograph captures an image, painting allows the artist to become part of the subject—to feel the textures, the light, and the emotions within a scene. Creating portraits and commissioned works, she says, is especially meaningful, as it allows her to understand a person or their vision in a deeper way.

In addition to her own studio practice, Fokine shares her love of art by teaching with the Putnam Arts Council, Yorktown Parks and Recreation, and Art and Soul.

Programs of the Putnam Arts Council are supported in part with public funds from Putnam County. Art in Public Places at Tilly’s Table is one such program. All artwork in this show is available for sale and reasonably priced with all proceeds benefiting the artist.
